My name is Kathy Trejo, the leader of Troop 610.
My girls first learned of Jaslynn’s plight on February 21, 2004. It just so happened that a blood drive for her was held in Lytle at a site where we were having a cookie booth sale. My girls wanted to help, but I explained that they were too young to donate blood. So after some discussion, and research, they decided to use their proceeds from their last cookie booth sale to purchase a Gameboy for Jaslynn so she could use it during chemotherapy treatments.
Before the last booth sale took place, an article appeared about it in the local papers. As a result, the media showed up to take some pictures on what turned out to be a cold, rainy Saturday morning. We also had people stopping by just to donate a few dollars and to tell my girls how proud they were of them, and what a wonderful thing they were doing for Jaslynn. My girls just said, "We are doing this for Jaslynn."
Jaslynn, along with her Grandma Joy and her brother Gibby, was able to brave the weather for a little while to visit us at that booth sale too. The girls were happy to meet her and enjoyed talking to her. She told my girls that when she was old enough, she wanted to be a Girl Scout just like them. We helped Jaslynn and her brother each pick out a box of their favorite cookies and then they headed home so she could rest.
We had invited Jaslynn and her family to attend my troop’s Awards Ceremony which was held at the Lytle Community Center in Lytle on May 1, 2004 so we could make a special presentation to her. However, she was unable to attend at the last minute due to a reaction to a new level of chemotherapy and her weakened immune system. But her Grandmother was able to attend - so we presented her with Jaslynn’s gift and a Certificate of Honor.
